My mum and I were talking about how cold the South Pole is because we had a frost today and I said our house was as cold as Antarctica. Then we went on line the Xtra newsletter said that your site was a good one to visit-so we did. Our house is not as cold as the South Pole but I still had to wear my mittens and the water in the birdbath was frozen! I haven't looked at everything in your site yet but I will visit again after school because it is so interesting.

All the best, I 'half' know what you are going thru' - doing 2 summer seaons at McMurdo - 1977 -1978, and 1979-1980 (the year or the Erebus disaster), BUT you can't beat the place + I would swap a week with you for "a kings ransom"!, - it just seems so hard getting back there - even if only for week or so !! Stick with it! you're really a lucky son of .....!!

Found you through the xtra wekly newsletter. My it sure looks cold down there - and we complain !!! Nice to see the smiles in the photo when it must be freezing for you out there. Nice to find your site and great job with your page. Must be a great experience for you, though I guess not without it's hazards and moments. You all do a great job. I live at angawhai, Northland New Zealand. It is a coastal town with a many-tentacled estuary, harbour and many surf beaches. Been wet for ages though, with just the odd peep of the sun now and again - months now. The weeds are growing the lawn is like a hay paddock and because of a mild autumn the plants don't know what to do (fruiting, flowering, budding out od season) and spring bulbs are flowering and the roses haven't stopped blooming. Consequently, when I saw your page it brought back many memories of life at McMurdo, Scott Base and Hallett.
I was later quite honoured when USARP or the US Navy fliers named the O'Kane Glacier (up by the Priestley) for services to pioneering Antarctic aviation.

Thanks for letting me share your experience.It must be a great community and not too far from us here in NZ. We certainly feel that icy blast at times.It,s been strange weather here the last two years hot for a few days then freezing cold.......the Roses in the whole country bloomed though till nearly Springtime last year...not this year though.

Actually Nathan It came through as an interesting site to check out via our local server in NewZealand. This is the second time I have visited your site. I find the photograpy superb. Hi there On our national news there is an info link about all types of interesting information. Your site came up as life in Antarctica. My husband went to Antarctica in the summer of 1988-1989 and was in the dry valleys at Lake Vanda where he was doing some Land Surveying. His base was at Lake Vanda although they went to Scott Base at the beginning and end of the summer. Antarctic Support Activities, Summer Support Unit - Davisville, RI, 8/69 - 7/72. Three sojurns to the Ice, two at the Pole. Looks different now with the geodesic dome, though. Lived in a Jamesway topside one year, was privileged to live in the tunnels the next. Many exciting photos still rest in my photo albumns. Was there for the first Limblad Explorer visit, when Max Conrad did an "...unplanned open field gear up landing...", etc. Best food in the Navy, though. Chi-Chi still the best part of the trip!!!

I read the book by the woman who had breast cancer while at the South Pole and enjoyed reading about her adventures. Now I'm reading lots of books about mountaineering and working my way, gradually, through most of them. Someday, when my kids are in college, I'd like to try an adventure like you're having. My mommy gave me the website, Nathan's grandmother. Hello Nathan: How are things twirling on the Bataan?-oh that's really getting old. Hi shorty. How is your love life? Probably similar to mine when I was your age. Great photos Nathan. Now Grandmere tells me you have been invited to write a book. Congratulations. Would it be a coffeetable book, with lots of photos? Or a children's book about penguins, frostbite and sick doctors? Or might you write a thriller about people putting money into a kitty to gues when the first sunlight streaks across the sky? (I guess I shouldn't say "streak" when talking about down there. That's really painful to picture Maybe you could write a comic book about a superhero like Iceman or Polarboy or Frigid Woman some other action figure. I was in the USAF Air Weather Service 1965-1970 in Europe.Duty was split between Wx observation, Wx briefings for flight crews, and a weather research project that involved fog dissapation! Actually I found you through the MSN Web site that I use as my home page.
As an almost life long "desert rat" that has probably developed about half lizard blood I can't imagine the COLD that you're experiencing. I'd freeze-up and go into hibernation within the first week :-) I have a friend, Neal Bicknese, who in the 50's as a Navy SeaBee helped build the McMurdo station. It was fun to see your pictures of it now. I'd expect it's changed a lot because he said most of the buildings they put up were quonset huts. I'll send him your web site address so he can get a look at it as it is now. Just got a little inspirational blurb from another friend that would be hard to apply at the pole. It read "bloom where you're planted". Good luck with the rest of your incredible year!

Hi. Well I found your sight out of pure bordon. I stuck in the house a lot as I'm on o2 and overweight and walking hurts a lot of the time.I was in the va hospital in Danville Ill for 4 mounths and while there one of the mle rns had a tour of duty where you at.I hapoe your staying as warm as possible. Stevesaid that frostbit of toues was a common thing down there.I cannott spell real good so forgive me. Well get back to me TL VanNote and family
